STUDIO AND SESSION DRUMMING
In The Studio and Live Performance – The Clear Advantage of Hiring an Experienced Player.
What I bring to the table is what no machine can do, incorporating experience, influences and nuances from 30+ years of playing into the mix. Having years of experience on the drums and a variety of percussion instruments allows me to play whatever a songwriter describes in their head.
There are many other aspects in general of using an experienced musician that are crucial to a project’s success, those are:
- The use of high-quality instruments.
- Properly maintaining the gear so there are zero rattles, buzzes and signal clips.
- Set-up and strike time is kept to a minimum.
- Knowledge of how to incorporate an ergonomic set-up, allowing for extended sessions that sound just as fresh in the eighth-hour as in the first-hour.
- Knowing how to get a great sound out of an instrument, such as striking the drum/cymbal to produce the best sound possible; being consistent in how the drum or cymbal is struck; or providing consistent snare drum back-beats.
- Tuning and optimizing an instrument to get a great, consistent sound and in general knowing what they should sound like in order to record well.
- Specific to drumming, coping with different room sizes and natural reverberations, including knowing what drum heads work best.
