Technician Work

TECHNICIAN WORK

Musicians and performing artists are notoriously and understandingly protective of their instruments and rely on me, as a specially trained technician, to care for and maintain their gear. As a drum tech, I am highly skilled and reliable and look to earn your trust and cultivate a lasting career.

Duties

For a general live production, as a drum tech, I am solely responsible for drums and other percussion instruments and related accessories.

Generally, I am tasked with:

  • Loading in instruments before the show.
  • Building the kit to specifications
  • Tuning of all drum and percussion instruments – Due to the inherent nature of drums, they may need to be tuned or tweaked more than once before a show, as humidity can rob a kit of tension in just a few hours.
  • Setting up the electronics interface which is generally consisting of power conditioners, an audio interface, synthesizer modules, a sampling module, and a headphone amp.
  • Striking all gear at the end of a show.

During sound check, I…

  • … work closely with the monitor engineer and front of house engineer.
  • … make any last adjustments to the entire rig as directed.

There is rarely downtime, as regular maintenance and calls to order parts can take place even while visiting the artists’ services table backstage.

During the show…

  • … my attention will stay constantly on you while performing on stage.

Skills

Since I am a trained musician, and have ability to play the drums, I have developed an acute ear for tone and pitch and can quickly diagnose the cause of a rattle, buzz or instrument out-of-tune. As a bonus, I have extensive experience in music and live show production; including being intimately familiar with:

  • Cymbals, Acoustic and Electronic Drums and Percussion.
  • Potential show and performance issues.
  • Various microphones.
  • Instrument hardware and maintenance.
  • Drum heads.
  • Audio software and electronic accessories.
