What you may not know is, you click a call-to-action link or a signup button solely because a word creates relevance & emotion.<\/p>\n

So really, how much do words matter?<\/h4>\n

The research behind this power of words is incredibly deep.<\/strong> Researchers have found that the word you use to describe a car accident (\u201ccontacted\u201d vs. \u201csmashed\u201d) paints the way eyewitnesses view the event. Another study found that simple stock names that are easier to pronounce lead to quicker gains post-IPO.<\/span><\/p>\n

Perhaps my favorite study is one shared by \u00a0Brian Clark of Copyblogger<\/a>.\u00a0Social psychologist Ellen Langer tested the power of a\u00a0single word in an experiment where she asked to cut in line at a copy machine. She tried three different ways of asking:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine?\u201d \u2013 60% said OK<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine\u00a0because I\u2019m in a rush?\u201d \u2013 94% said OK<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cExcuse me, I have five pages. May I use the Xerox machine\u00a0because I have to make some copies?\u201d \u2013 93% said OK<\/span><\/p>\n

\"WordsI don\u2019t know about you, but I thought Langer\u2019s third request was rather elementary. Yet it didn\u2019t matter. The trigger word \u201cbecause\u201d was all she needed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The takeaway:<\/strong>\u00a0As single words matter, when you want people to take action, always give a reason using an influential word or phrase!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
